As everyone knows, preparing for a baby means acquiring a lot of new items – which makes a baby shower almost a necessity. It’s a chance for loved ones to demonstrate to the parents that they care and are there for them. Some people consider it improper to have a second-baby shower, since it was unlikely that mom and dad would need very much, especially the big-ticket items. It is now more acceptable to have a shower for a second baby, but you have to make some modifications.
You may want to consider having an essentials-only shower, having guests purchase those basic items that every baby needs new, like diapers, bottles, and bath accesories. You can also make a list of whatever the parents say they need but did not receive with their first child. Or, you can hold a shower for mom – instead of baby gifts, bring mom gifts that she will appreciate in the weeks leading up to and after the birth. You can choose items that will be a treat, like a thick, sweet-smelling body lotion, or something more practical, like an extra-large handbag.
While most moms are certainly happy with their role as mothers, it can also be fun to host a shower focused on HER, with gifts like sensual dark chocolate or a department store cosmetics case. You can also pool your money together to purchase gift certificates for spa treatments or an elegant dinner, though if you can prearrange babysitting, even better. You can also have a strategic meeting with the father-to-be and the closest friends and family of the mom before the party, in order to make up a helping hands calendar.
These can include cleaning house while mom and baby are in the hospital, taking the older child to school in the morning so mom can sneak in a little extra sleep for the first week, or scheduling a weekend for going to the warehouse club store or making a big grocery run. The calendar can be revealed to the mom-to-be at the shower, along with all the names and phone numbers of the volunteers. There are situations where neither baby nor mom are in need of any new items. You can also just have a straight-up party, intimate or with many friends and family, to celebrate the upcoming birth.
Optionally, guests can bring unwrapped baby gifts and these can be donated to a women’s charity or other organization that can put them to good use. Another idea for a second-baby shower is to hold a “freezer” party, with guests bringing food that can go in the freezer or else be easily stored. During the final days of pregnancy and the first week after the birth, mom will definitely appreciate this. If having this kind of a shower, however, you’ll need to let mom know so she can see if she has enough space for everything, as well as choose a date very close to her delivery date.
Finally, if the new baby is going to be several years younger than the next-oldest sibling (a so-called “caboose” baby), you can feel free to host a full-on baby shower. Many times even the “big” items will no longer be around, or will need safety updates, so mom and dad will appreciate all the help they can get.
Even if the baby shower is small or minor in terms of gift-giving, the most important thing to remember is that it is an opportunity to show the mom-to-be your love for her and her little one.
